Overview:
The Maryland Department of Human Services is seeking a motivated graduate student with a background in social work, public policy, law, or related fields to join their Policy Team in the Office of the Secretary. This externship offers hands-on experience in policy analysis and development, as well as the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals in the field. The position is part-time and can be done in-person, hybrid, or remotely.

Responsibilities:
The extern will work on various projects and initiatives related to adult and child welfare, public economic benefits, and child support administration. Some of the specific duties include:

- Conducting research and making recommendations for best practices
- Identifying relevant statutes, policies, and regulations to inform and recommend policy action
- Drafting and editing executive memos, bill comment forms, legislation, and regulations
- Staying current on state and federal policies and trends in child welfare and related fields
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and participating in meetings with community advocates and constituents
- Analyzing proposed policy changes and advocating for reforms that promote the well-being of children and families

Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled in a graduate program with a focus on child welfare, family or poverty policy, or related fields
- Excellent research, verbal and written communication, and analytical skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations and professionals
- Demonstrated interest in supporting families and child welfare issues
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
- Sensitivity to cultural differences, trauma-informed practice, and ethical considerations
