Butte, MT (2) Public Defender Position Available with Competitive Salary and Benefits Department: Office of the Public Defender (OPD) Organization: State of Montana Position Title: Public Defender Salary: Starting salary of $70,714.60 for unlicensed attorneys, with an increase to $84,364.37 upon licensure by the State Bar of Montana. Application Deadline: Ongoing The Office of the Public Defender (OPD) in the State of Montana is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Public Defender. This position offers a competitive salary and benefits package, as well as the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities by providing expert defense and upholding constitutional rights. Key Responsibilities: - Represent clients in court and other legal proceedings, including cases at the Montana Supreme Court if necessary. - Provide legal defense in cases that may be high-profile or involve significant liability exposure, such as death penalty or life in prison cases. - Prepare legal documents, evidence, and exhibits necessary for litigation. - Interpret and apply state and federal laws and administrative rules. - Identify and interview parties, witnesses, and experts involved in legal proceedings. - Provide consultation, legal advice, and facilitate legal decisions. - Attend continuing education trainings and maintain knowledge of changes and developments in the law. - Work effectively with marginalized populations and be sensitive to cultural differences. - Travel to attend court, trainings, and provide services to clients, which may be up to 40% of the time. Requirements: - Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school. - Membership in the State Bar of Montana. - Knowledge of legal and court policies, procedures, and practices related to indigent defense. - Familiarity with criminal law and criminal procedure in the State of Montana. - Ability to work effectively with marginalized populations and understand cultural differences. - Skilled in using standard office equipment, programs, and software. - Strong organization, time management, and oral and written communication skills.
