Counsel II - Legal - Bridgewater State Hospital
Bridgewater, MA Counsel II - Legal - Bridgewater State Hospital - (240009XT) At the Department of Correction, we are dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for all employees while also offering a competitive compensation package. We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Counsel II to join our team at Bridgewater State Hospital Legal Office in Bridgewater, MA. This is a full-time position with a schedule of 9-5 and offers a salary range of $84,243.38 - $122,903.04 biweekly. Key Responsibilities: • Pursue civil commitment petitions under G.L. c. 123 and District Court Rogers petitions on a weekly basis • Handle guardianship petitions in various probate courts • Conduct civil commitment petitions to the Superior Court • Provide in-house counsel advice to all DOC employees on applicable laws, regulations, and case decisions • Defend correctional officials in cases involving constitutional issues, conditions of confinement, medical care, and systems litigation • Handle an active caseload of inmate civil rights litigation in state and federal courts • Conduct commitment hearings and trials on behalf of the DOC • Conduct discovery, including interviewing witnesses and gathering relevant records • Conduct legal research and prepare motions, legal briefs, and memoranda of law • Perform other duties as assigned Compensation and Benefits: • 75% state-paid medical insurance premium • Reasonable dental and vision plans • Flexible spending accounts and dependent care assistance programs • Low-cost basic and optional life insurance • Retirement savings options • 12 paid holidays per year and competitive sick, vacation, and personal time • Long-term disability and extended illness program participation options • Employee assistance programs • Professional development and continuing education opportunities • Qualified employer for Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness Program Preferred Qualifications: • Experienced trial attorney with significant appellate experience • Excellent academic background • Strong oral and written communication skills • Minimum of two (2) years of litigation experience • Criminal justice experience preferred Requirements: • Juris Doctor (JD) degree • Admission to the Massachusetts Bar • At least three years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience in the practice of law • Current and valid motor vehicle driver's license We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, national origin, veteran status, or any other basis covered by appropriate law.
