The Position

Mendocino County Counsel's Office is seeking an experienced Deputy County Counsel IV to provide legal representation, advice, and counsel to the County, its departments, officers, boards, and commissions. This is an advanced-level position in the Deputy County Counsel series and requires a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school, current active membership in the State Bar of California, and at least three years of full time experience as an attorney practicing governmental or civil law.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have significant experience as a general civil and/or public law litigator, strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and a commitment to public service. Excellent legal research, writing, and trial advocacy skills are also required. Experience in the areas of employment/labor law, public resources, land use, and tort litigation is desirable.

Job Responsibilities:

- Provides legal counsel and representation to the County, its boards, commissions, and department heads.
- Attends board and commission meetings as a legal advisor.
- Researches and prepares written and verbal legal opinions.
- Directs support staff in preparing contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and legal opinions.
- Assists in the negotiation and drafting of contracts.
- Conducts legal research and interprets laws and regulations.
- Directs complex and controversial cases and provides work direction to other attorneys.
- Represents clients in court and before administrative tribunals.
- Maintains professional knowledge and skills through attending seminars and training programs.
- Conducts client workshops on legal topics.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
- Current active membership in the State Bar of California.
- At least three years of full time experience as an attorney practicing governmental or civil law.

Licenses and Certifications:

- Licensed to practice law in the State of California.
- Valid Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Knowledge of principles and practices regarding the practice of law in the State of California.
- Familiarity with applicable state, federal, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
- Budgetary and administrative principles and practices.
- Proficiency in computer applications and hardware related to job duties.
- Record keeping, report preparation, and filing methods.
- Research, statistical analysis, and report presentation techniques.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to provide direction and training to staff.
- Analytical thinking and ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations.
- Public speaking and presentation skills.

Mental and Physical Abilities:

- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to sit, use hands, and speak and hear regularly.
- Ability to occasionally stand and walk.
