Legal Lead for Privacy & Data Security (Americas)

The Legal Lead for Privacy & Data Security is a highly strategic position responsible for providing practical, timely, strategic, and high-quality legal advice and counsel on global privacy and data security-related matters across the Astellas enterprise. The position is based in Northbrook, Illinois with the possibility of remote work from certain states. The ideal candidate will have a law degree, at least 7-10 years of experience in a law firm or pharmaceutical legal department, and a deep understanding of the legal issues affecting privacy and the pharmaceutical industry. This position reports to the Legal Lead for Global Privacy, Data Security, and RIM and will work closely with key stakeholders to advise on applicable privacy and data protection laws and regulations. The Legal Lead for Privacy & Data Security will also oversee legal and regulatory aspects of data collection and use, privacy disclosures, and transparency. The role will involve collaborating with Ethics & Compliance to ensure Astellas' compliance with global privacy obligations, and providing legal support for the strategic reviewing, drafting, and negotiating of privacy and data security terms in contracts with business partners and vendors. The successful candidate will be able to grasp legal issues quickly, exercise sound judgment, and provide practical and constructive legal advice in a time-sensitive, dynamic, and fast-paced global environment. The position also requires strong negotiation and communication skills, as well as the ability to manage a large workload and prioritize critical tasks. The Legal Lead for Privacy & Data Security will also play a key role in developing and maintaining strong working relationships across the organization and will work closely with other members of the Legal and IP teams to leverage synergies and efficiencies. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to integrity and professionalism and a passion for excellence. - Job Title: Legal Lead for Privacy & Data Security (Americas) - Location: Northbrook, IL - Salary: Competitive, based on experience - Experience: At least 7-10 years of experience in a law firm or pharmaceutical legal department - Degree: Law Degree, LL.M. or equivalent; license to practice law in the United States Purpose and Scope: - Responsible for providing practical, timely, strategic, and high-quality legal advice and counsel on global privacy and data security-related matters across the Astellas enterprise - Focus on Americas region, including DigitalX, Commercial, Clinical Sciences, Medical Affairs, and Rx - Collaborate and coordinate with key stakeholders to advise on applicable privacy and data protection laws, regulations, and guidelines - Ensure Astellas' compliance with global privacy obligations and oversee legal and regulatory aspects of data collection and use, privacy disclosures, and transparency - Balance commercial opportunities with legal and compliance risks in a complex and fast-evolving regulatory environment - Proactively identify and mitigate risks to the Company's ability to achieve its corporate objectives Essential Job Responsibilities: - Provide practical, timely, strategic, and high-quality legal advice and counsel on global privacy and data security-related matters, with a primary focus on Americas - Advise on best practices and compliance with global privacy and data protection laws - Oversee legal and regulatory aspects of data collection and use, privacy disclosures, and transparency - Support privacy and cybersecurity incident response programs - Review, draft, and negotiate privacy and data security terms in contracts with business partners and vendors - Develop and deliver privacy training materials and other communications - Provide privacy and data security-related advice and support to Affiliate lawyers in the Americas - Keep senior management and business clients updated on changes in legal developments affecting the pharmaceutical industry - Manage and set priorities for the Privacy, Data Security, and RIM team based on business goals, risks, and resources - Develop a streamlined and consistent approach to advising business teams on privacy and data security matters - Identify key legal issues and anticipate potential legal issues within the organization - Retain, supervise, and direct outside counsel effectively and efficiently manage legal expenses - Coordinate closely with global Ethics & Compliance colleagues - Help develop a Culture of Excellence for the Privacy, Data Security, and RIM team - Work collaboratively with a broad range of people and functions throughout the organization - Other projects as requested by Legal Lead for Global Privacy, Data Security, and RIM or Head of Legal Commercial, Regulatory and Privacy - Overnight and international travel as needed Qualifications: - Law Degree, LL.M. or equivalent; license to practice law in the United States - At least 7-10 years' experience in a law firm or pharmaceutical legal department - In-depth knowledge of privacy and data security laws and regulations in Americas - Deep understanding of legal issues affecting privacy and the pharmaceutical industry - Strong ability to grasp legal issues quickly, exercise sound judgment, and provide practical and constructive advice in a time-sensitive, dynamic, and fast-paced global environment - Strong negotiation and communication skills (oral and written) - Team player with strong organization and teamwork skills - Commitment to integrity and professionalism and a passion for excellence Benefits: - Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance - Generous Paid Time Off options, including Vacation, Sick time, plus national holidays including Heritage Days, and Summer and Winter Breaks - 401(k) match and annual company contribution - Company paid life insurance - Annual Corporate Bonus and Quarterly Sales Incentive for eligible positions - Long Term Incentive Plan for eligible positions - Referral bonus program #LI-KT1 Category Legal Commercial, Regulatory and Privacy Astellas is committed to equality of opportunity in all aspects of employment.
