Introduction

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides free legal services to those who cannot afford a lawyer. LASMNY is dedicated to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce and encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply for their positions. They currently have full-time law graduate positions available in multiple office locations in Central New York, including Binghamton, Oneonta, and Utica. These positions require a law degree from an accredited law school and admission to the New York State Bar.

Job Summary

The law graduate will work under the supervision of a managing attorney to provide legal services to eligible clients in civil legal matters. This includes conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and representing clients in administrative proceedings and hearings. The law graduate will also participate in staff and case acceptance meetings and program-wide workgroups. They must demonstrate an understanding and commitment to LASMNY's mission and values.

Job Qualifications

To be considered for this position, applicants must have a law degree from an accredited law school and be seeking admission to the New York State Bar. They should also have proficiency in Microsoft Office and legal research, and being bilingual or multilingual is a plus.

The salary for this position is dependent on experience. LASMNY offers a generous benefits package, including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance, as well as retirement plans and paid time off. Remote work may be possible with approval from management.

Essential Job Functions

- Communicate effectively and efficiently with clients and applicants for services over the phone or in person
- Interview clients objectively and competently
- Prepare and file legal documents as necessary
- Independently manage a caseload and fully litigate assigned cases when appropriate
- Record billable time and case notes accurately and in a timely manner
- Work professionally and collaboratively with colleagues, judges, opposing counsel, and other stakeholders
- Show commitment to professional growth in diverse areas of law
- Engage in outreach and community education
- Attend and participate in meetings and trainings as requested
- Comply with all Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and LASMNY policies, procedures, and grant-based reporting requirements
- Perform other duties as assigned by a managing attorney or direct supervisor.
