LASMNY's mission is to provide free legal assistance to low-income individuals facing civil legal problems that impact their basic needs. They strive to help stabilize finances, protect against domestic violence, obtain access to healthcare, and prevent homelessness. They also offer services to specific vulnerable populations such as seniors, victims of domestic violence, people with disabilities, refugees and immigrants, and veterans.

JOB SUMMARY

The Supervising Attorney, reporting to the Deputy Director of Litigation Services, will provide leadership and supervision to attorneys and paralegal advocates in the Disability Advocacy Program. They will also provide legal services to low-income clients and client groups, prepare legal documents, manage a caseload, and engage in learning and leadership development.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Supervise and provide support to attorneys and paralegal advocates in assisting clients with federal disability benefits.

• Provide respectful and culturally competent legal services to low-income clients.

• Prepare and file legal documents.

• Manage a caseload.

• Actively engage in learning and leadership development.

• Identify mentoring opportunities for staff and train less experienced attorneys and paralegals.

• Collaborate with other organizations and community members to address legal problems.

• Manage grant requirements and compliance.

• Maintain accurate records and statistics.

• Stay informed on legal developments and attend training sessions and conferences.

• Engage in outreach and education efforts.

• Occasional travel to various courts and LASMNY offices.

• Create and maintain a safe work environment.

• Attend meetings and trainings as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Law degree from an accredited law school.

• Licensed to practice in NYS or eligible for admission on motion.

• Minimum of three (3) years of legal experience.

• Understanding of how civil legal issues intersect with social and economic justice.

• Experience with legal issues affecting low-income tenants.

• Experience supervising staff preferred.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office and legal research.

• Fluency in other languages a plus.

• Valid NYS Driver's License or ability to obtain one.
