Department Information:

The Senior Paralegal (USAO-Civil) will work in the Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York. This division is responsible for representing the United States in civil litigation involving the federal government and its agencies, as well as handling affirmative and defensive civil litigation matters for the United States.

Job Description:

The Senior Paralegal (USAO-Civil) will provide a variety of direct paralegal services to assist AUSAs (Assistant United States Attorneys) in the Civil Division. This includes seeking information and locating new sources of information, independently gathering factual material, and preparing case-summary binders. The Senior Paralegal will also obtain financial and statistical information, as well as agency, court, and other public records.

In addition to these tasks, the Senior Paralegal will be responsible for analyzing documents, drafting court filings and memoranda for AUSA review, and organizing and managing a substantial quantity of records, documents, data, and discovery. They will also conduct financial analyses and related investigations, prepare subpoenas, and review and summarize large productions in response to such subpoenas.

The Senior Paralegal must have a working knowledge of federal and state court systems, civil litigation, civil discovery, legal research procedures and resources, and financial fraud investigations. They will also need to be proficient in a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and imaging. Additionally, the Senior Paralegal must have hands-on familiarity with ESI (Electronically Stored Information) tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.

This role may also require occasional travel for cases, special projects, and/or training purposes. The Senior Paralegal will report to a Supervisory Paralegal or Project Supervisor and will work closely with other Contractor staff, with occasional contact with trial staff.

Responsibilities:

Provide direct paralegal services to assist AUSAs in the Civil Division.
Seek information and locate new sources of information.
Independently gather factual material.
Prepare case-summary binders.
Obtain financial and statistical information.
Obtain agency, court, and other public records.
Analyze documents, and draft court filings and memoranda for AUSA review.
Organize and manage a substantial quantity of records, documents, data, and discovery.
Conduct financial analyses and related investigations.
Prepare subpoenas and review and summarize large productions in response to such subpoenas.
Review a wide variety of documents via various platforms.
Prepare attorneys for, and assist with, trials and depositions.
Review case-related materials and analyze and summarize healthcare billing and treatment records.
Prepare discovery demands and organize, review, and analyze discovery responses.
Prepare preliminary drafts of simple legal memoranda, documents, and correspondence for AUSA review and signature.
Provide automated litigation support to attorneys in trial preparation, depositions, and courtroom presentations.
Utilize various software applications and graphics hardware.
Provide technical support (e.g., enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits).
Perform moderately complex legal research using various legal and law-enforcement tools.
Create and manipulate Excel spreadsheets.

Qualifications:

Paralegal certificate, JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school.
At least two years of litigation paralegal experience or project experience.
At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.
Sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications.
Hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure.
DOJ MBI must be obtainable.
