The Assistant Public Defender will work with a team of attorneys to provide legal representation to clients in criminal cases, including pre-trial, trial, and post-conviction proceedings - The role also involves providing legal counsel and advice to juvenile clients and their families in cases involving delinquency, status offenses, and other related matters - The Assistant Public Defender will be responsible for conducting thorough interviews with clients, preparing legal documents, and developing defense strategies - The role also includes representing clients in court at all stages of the legal process and advocating for their rights and needs - The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work closely with social workers, investigators, and other staff to develop comprehensive defense strategies Responsibilities: - Represent clients in criminal cases, including pre-trial, trial, and post-conviction proceedings - Provide legal counsel and advice to juvenile clients and their families in cases involving delinquency, status offenses, and other related matters - Conduct thorough interviews with clients to gather facts, explain legal processes, and advise on possible outcomes - Prepare and file legal documents, motions, and briefs on behalf of clients - Develop defense strategies, negotiate plea deals, and advocate for alternative sentencing where appropriate - Maintain detailed case files and documentation, ensuring all legal deadlines are met - Represent clients in court at all stages of the legal process, including arraignments, hearings, trials, and appeals - Cross-examine witnesses, present evidence, and argue motions to suppress evidence or dismiss charges - Ensure the rights of juvenile clients are protected, and that appropriate rehabilitation and support services are considered - Work closely with social workers, investigators, and other staff to develop comprehensive defense strategies - Communicate regularly with clients, keeping them informed of case developments and legal options - Engage with community resources to support clients' needs, including mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and educational support for juveniles -
