Position Description:
The Deputy County Counsel will provide legal services, representation, advice, and assistance to various departments and agencies within the county. They will handle a variety of legal matters, including contracts, litigation, labor and employment issues, and government regulations. The ideal candidate will have strong research, writing, and critical thinking skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Experience in a public agency setting is preferred but not required. This position offers the opportunity to work both in the office and remotely, delivering results in a highly ethical and politically sensitive manner.

Salary Information:
Deputy County Counsel I: $45.00 - $55.32
Deputy County Counsel II: $49.50 - $60.85
Deputy County Counsel III: $54.45 - $66.93
Deputy County Counsel IV: $59.90 - $73.63
(3% COLA increase effective October 2024 and October 2025)

Job Responsibilities:
- Provide legal services and representation to County departments, employees, the Board of Supervisors, and various committees and commissions.
- Review and research contracts for County department purchases or services.
- Prepare legal documents and correspondence, including contracts, briefs, petitions, opinions, and resolutions.
- Represent the County in litigation, including court appearances and motion practice.
- Partner with and support outside counsel representing the County.
- Provide legal advice and representation to County departments on various issues, including general liability, tax claims, and property assessments.
- Conduct training for departments on legal issues and responsibilities.
- Review legislation and litigation relevant to County services and advise County personnel and the Board of Supervisors on its relevancy.
- Review contracts for compliance with legal implications.
- Review subdivision maps, plans, codes, and procedures for compliance with laws and regulations.
- Prepare petitions and represent the Public Guardian in probate and conservatorship cases.
- Represent and advise County personnel in labor and employment matters.
- Make presentations to the Board of Supervisors and attend meetings with other governmental agencies, professional organizations, and community groups.
- Negotiate with outside parties on behalf of the County.
- Stay up-to-date on trends and innovations in municipal law and research new products and enhancements that may benefit the County.
- Provide work direction to support staff and evaluate their work product.

Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.
- 2-6 years of professional legal experience, depending on the level of the position.
- Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations related to public entities.
- Strong research, writing, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with others, including clients, colleagues, and outside parties.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Active membership in the State Bar of California.
- Must possess a valid California driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
