Position Overview:

NREL is seeking an experienced ESH Professional IV to join our team in support of three research facilities within the Materials, Chemical and Computational Science (MCCS) Directorate. This role will provide advanced ESH support for research projects related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. The ideal candidate will have extensive technical expertise and knowledge of laws, regulations, and procedures related to ESH practices. This is a full-time, regular position with a competitive salary and benefits package.

Key Responsibilities:

- Serve as the ESH Point of Contact (POC) for assigned R&D and support organizations
- Conduct advanced risk assessments and respond to staff inquiries and requests for assistance
- Review plans and drawings for future research projects and perform design reviews and Process Hazard Analyses
- Present ESH information at meetings and assist in resolution of ESH concerns and issues
- Develop and implement workplace exposure monitoring plans
- Perform safety assessments and readiness reviews prior to operation of new/changed research experiments
- Interact with researchers, line management, research operations managers, and senior management
- Serve as POC for building-related ESH issues, including support for construction and maintenance activities, fire and life safety assessments, and indoor air quality assessments
- Provide guidance to NREL staff on implementation of various ESH programs
- Apply advanced ESH technical skills in areas such as industrial hygiene, occupational safety, and emergency response
- Lead/facilitate Process Hazard Analyses or other complex hazard/risk assessment processes for research operations
- Implement and administer assigned NREL ESH programs and Office Desk Procedures
- Conduct ESH inspections, audits, and oversight assessments
- Provide ESH training to various organizational units
- Act as backup for ESH programs assigned to other ESH&Q Office members
- Conduct accident/incident investigations and follow-up on corrective action implementation
- Support incident response operations

Basic Qualifications:

- Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
- Extensive technical expertise and knowledge of laws, regulations, and procedures related to ESH practices
- Excellent leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to use various computer software programs

Additional Required Qualifications:

- Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures, and practices related to specific fields
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills
- Excellent technical writing skills
- Ability to perform site work that can involve extreme weather conditions and moderate physical exertion
- Ability to walk one mile continuously, stand continuously for two hours, and lift and carry 45 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

- ESH experience in a semiconductor fabrication/foundry cleanroom or related industry
- Experience with fire and building codes as they relate to hazardous production materials (HPM)
- Ability to work in a highly dynamic team environment
- Experience with work planning and control systems
- Experience with toxic gas monitoring equipment
- Experience in applying equipment engineering standards to design builds of research equipment
- Strong chemical safety background and ability to recognize and specify requirements for controlling hazards
- Proven ability to analyze situations and exhibit a positive approach to problem solving
- Experience working with or participating in an emergency response team
- Demonstrated leadership in team, task, or project responsibilities
- Demonstrated ability to independently perform duties
- Advanced technical knowledge of ESH practices, procedures, and techniques
