Law Clerk Opportunities Spring 2025 part time
Amsterdam, NY

• Provide effective, free civil legal services and education to and advocacy for people with low income or other barriers to accessing the legal system
• Secure basic needs, protect and preserve legal rights, provide equal access to justice, and seek fairness and dignity for all clients
• Offices in Albany, Amsterdam, Canton, Gloversville, Plattsburgh, and Saratoga Springs
• Serve low and moderate-income residents of Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, St. Lawrence, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington Counties and the St. Regis Reservation
• Commitment to providing legal services to the poor
• Excellent research and writing skills
• Ability to work well under stress and time pressure
• Prior relevant experience in legal services to the poor, especially law school clinical experience, and the ability to speak Spanish is a plus
• $22 per hour pay rate
• All work performed with Legal Aid will count towards the 50-hour pro bono requirement for admission to the New York State Bar
• Minimum commitment of 10 hours per week
• Remote or in-person clerkships available
• Hybrid work options also available

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:

• Disability Advocacy Program - All Offices
o Represent clients with physical and mental impairments
o Review medical, educational, and vocational records to argue for disability findings
o Opportunity to perform research and writing for federal court cases, administrative appeals, and hearings
o Call clients, observe meetings and hearings, and assist attorneys in preparation for hearings

• Domestic Violence Legal Assistance (DVLAP) - All Offices
o Assist with obtaining Orders of Protection, Child and Spousal Support, Custody and Visitation, and Divorce
o Provide assistance with civil legal problems related to domestic violence
o Experience with domestic violence or sexual assault work preferred
o Solid experience with client interviewing and counseling, petition and motion drafting, and family court practice
o Occasional travel for court appearances and client meetings required

• Economic Justice - Albany, Amsterdam, and Saratoga Springs Offices
o Goal to ensure low-income residents have sufficient income for basic needs
o Assist with accessing and securing financial support
o Identify and secure changes needed in delivery of income supports and related human services
o Opportunity to perform research and writing for fair hearings and administrative appeals
o Assist with Article 78 appeals
o Call clients, observe meetings and hearings, and assist staff attorney in preparing evidence
o Responsibilities also include calling medical/social services providers, document review and analysis, drafting legal documents and correspondence, and assisting with hearing/trial preparation

• Foreclosure Prevention Program - Albany, Amsterdam, or Remote
o Provide legal assistance to low-income homeowners facing foreclosure
o Assist with tax foreclosure proceedings, post-foreclosure evictions, land contract matters, and tenants in foreclosed properties
o Responsibilities include client contact, legal research and writing, document review and analysis, investigation, drafting legal documents and correspondence, and attending client interviews, meetings, and court appearances

• Housing - All Offices
o Represent low-income clients facing eviction in city and town/village courts
o Assist with termination or denial of housing vouchers and emergency assistance
o Occasional affirmative litigation to reverse illegal evictions and make necessary repairs
o Opportunity for drafting pleadings and correspondence, conducting client interviews, and contacting clients, case development and investigation, research and legal assessment, trial and hearing preparation, and accompanying attorneys to court and administrative hearings

• Kaianerenhsera Aorihwa:ke Shakotihshienons - Canton Office/St. Regis Mohawk Reservation
o Work with civil legal services project between LASNNY and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT)
o Opportunities to work on issues of cross-border recognition of orders of protection and assist SRMT members and residents of the reserve in accessing home mortgages

• Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) - Albany Office
o Offer free tax advice and representation to low-income New Yorkers in sixteen counties
o Assist with preparing forms, interviewing clients, researching tax law, preparing tax returns, and collecting financial information
o Assist with federal tax issues and occasionally New York State tax disputes
o Most taxpayers assisted have incomes at or below 250% of the federal poverty level

• Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) - Albany Office
o Provide legal advice and representation to low-income New Yorkers in sixteen counties
o Assist with various civil legal needs, including bankruptcy, consumer law, trusts & estates, advance directives, matrimonial law, unemployment law, housing law, and name changes
o Opportunities to interview clients, draft pleadings, facilitate divorce clinics and the Attorney for the Day Program in housing court, research legal issues, and provide advice
o Work with experienced volunteer attorneys to assist clients

• Senior Legal Services (SLS) - Albany, Amsterdam, and Saratoga
