Legal Director
Salt Lake City, UT Legal Director [ACLU of Utah] Summary: The ACLU of Utah is seeking an experienced Legal Director to lead their legal advocacy efforts, including litigation, and play a strategic role in the organization's overall plan. The Legal Director will manage a full docket of state and federal cases, supervise staff attorneys, and collaborate with national ACLU staff and other partners to advance advocacy efforts. The ideal candidate will have experience with strategic planning and project management, as well as a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Key Responsibilities: - Manage and develop an ambitious docket of cases that align with the ACLU of Utah's strategic priorities in civil rights and liberties - Act as lead attorney in actively litigating cases in state and federal courts - Supervise staff attorneys and legal support staff, including paralegals and interns - Recruit and collaborate with cooperating attorneys to expand legal efforts - Convene the Legal Panel and work with the Executive Director and Case Selection Committee to screen and develop promising litigation and advocacy - Collaborate with ACLU of Utah staff to implement integrated advocacy campaigns and strategies - Develop relationships with external stakeholders and serve as a spokesperson for the organization - Ensure strategic plans for the Legal Department align with the organization's priorities - Meet with donors to discuss the work of the Legal Department and other civil rights issues - Conduct staff training sessions and workshops on legal issues Qualifications: - JD from an accredited law school and admission to the Utah State Bar - Strong leadership skills and ability to manage a team - 4 years of experience litigating cases, with a significant portion in a lead role - Experience managing others in litigation - Patience, emotional intelligence, and cultural competency - Understanding of diversity and inclusion in a team setting - Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines - Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills - Commitment to civil rights and liberties Salary & Benefits: - Base salary range of $120,000 to $130,000 - Excellent benefits, including PTO, parental leave, and 401(k) with employer matching - Medical, dental, and vision insurance with premiums covered by the organization - Life and disability insurance - Employee assistance programs - Commitment to professional growth and development To Apply: Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter in PDF format.
