Overview:

- Duties include representing criminal defendants in District Court cases, conducting client interviews, conducting legal research, and traveling for work.

Responsibilities:
- Vigorously, effectively, ethically, and with integrity represent criminal defendants in District Court cases.
- Conduct client interviews and maintain case notes and records.
- Research legal issues and draft clear and concise motions.
- Obtain knowledge of the case through discovery and investigation.
- Develop a theory of the case that is consistent with the facts and law.
- Willing to try appropriate cases.
- Perform duties primarily in both office and courtroom settings.
- Travel is required.

Minimum Requirements:
- Education: See Special Requirements.
- Experience: 1 year as a licensed attorney or supervised practice under Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.116, or a combination totaling at least 1 year of experience.
- Substitute Education for Experience: A Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) can substitute for the required experience.
- Substitute Experience for Education: None
- Special Requirements: Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky OR comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.111, 2.112, or 2.117. Must maintain any required licensure, certification, or other credentials for the length of employment.

Working Conditions:
- Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings.
- Travel is required.

Probationary Period:
- Initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.

The ideal candidate for this role will have criminal defense experience, strong organizational skills, and a passion for helping vulnerable communities. This is a full-time position, exempt from overtime pay, with a salary range of $55,834.32 - $83,752.56 annually.

As a Staff Attorney II, you will represent criminal defendants in District Court cases, conduct client interviews, and research legal issues. You will also have the opportunity to develop a theory of the case and try appropriate cases. This role requires travel and duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings.

To be considered for this position, you must have at least 1 year of experience as a licensed attorney or supervised practice under Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.116. A Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) can substitute for the required experience. You must also be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky OR comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.111, 2.112, or 2.117. The probationary period for this job is 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
