Attorney - Assistant Public Defender I
Winchester, VA

The Indigent Defense Commission is seeking a passionate and dedicated Attorney - Assistant Public Defender I for their Winchester/Front Royal office in Virginia. This full-time, salaried position offers a hiring range of $83,276.00 State Benefits Local Salary Supplement, and is open to individuals with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission. Job Duties:
- Conduct client and witness interviews
- Work with staff investigators to investigate cases
- File pretrial motions and post-trial motions
- Litigate motions and notice appropriate appealable issues
- Try cases in the General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts
- See clients in jail in a timely manner and communicate regularly with the client, family members, and other approved parties

Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission
- Active interest in the cause of indigent defense, criminal justice reform, and social justice
- Willingness to try cases and desire to improve as a trial attorney
- Ability to learn and quickly internalize feedback
- Ability to track and meet deadlines
- Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized
- Valid driver’s license and means to travel to all courts and regional jails
- Knowledge of criminal law and evidence

Additional Considerations:
- Prior experience working in a Public Defender office will be strongly considered
- Individuals hired before obtaining their Virginia Bar licensure will be employed as a Law Clerk with a starting salary of $70,972.00, and will be eligible for the title and salary of an Assistant Public Defender I upon passing the bar and becoming licensed
