Staff Attorney - Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault/Public Benefits
Ithaca, NY Overview LawNY®, a not-for-profit law firm, is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney for its Family Law/Public Benefits Unit in Ithaca, New York. The attorney will primarily provide legal representation in family court for victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault, as well as legal services related to public assistance eligibility for emergency housing. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of how civil legal issues intersect with social and economic justice and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsibilities - Maintain a full-time caseload representing eligible clients - Develop and maintain specialized knowledge in the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault, providing trauma-informed legal services, family court representation, and legal advice and supportive services to victims - Collaborate with other LawNY® advocates and community partners to address legal issues affecting low-income communities - Contribute to a safe and healthy work environment for fellow employees - Cooperate in all grant reporting requirements and program compliance Qualifications - Admitted to practice and in good standing in New York State - Demonstrated commitment to service for low-income individuals - Excellent oral and written communication skills Additional Traits and Skills - Litigation and advocacy experience in state and/or federal court and/or administrative forums in poverty law, especially government benefits, eviction prevention, consumer, and/or fair housing - Experience incorporating an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens into legal practice - Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to providing trauma-informed services - Lived experience with client communities - Fluency in a language other than English spoken by clients - Passion for social justice and commitment to LawNY®'s mission - Proficiency in Google Drive/GSuite, Word, Excel, and legal databases Compensation Salary is dependent on experience and based on a pay scale with annual increments. The starting salary for a Staff Attorney is $70,000, and the salary for a Staff Attorney with five years of experience is $84,400. LawNY® staff may also qualify for public interest law school loan forgiveness programs.
