Civil Rights Attorney

NCPLS is seeking a dedicated and experienced Civil Rights Attorney to lead their Jails Project. This role will focus on promoting social and economic justice through systemic change in North Carolina's jails and detention centers. The ideal candidate will have 5 years of experience and a North Carolina law license, with a strong passion for civil rights advocacy and a specific vision for improving conditions for incarcerated individuals. The salary for this position is $55,000 to $70,000 per year, with excellent benefits.

The Jails Project team will provide three major types of advocacy for clients, including immediate intervention, direct representation, and pro se assistance. The attorney in this role will work closely with a paralegal to review and respond to client and community inquiries, litigate constitutional claims, and collaborate with community partners to maximize impact. The Jails Team will serve individuals housed in all 55 jails throughout the state, with a focus on addressing serious medical and mental health concerns, constitutional violations, and providing self-help materials as needed.

Responsibilities for this role include reviewing claims to determine litigation priorities, monitoring and responding to jail policy changes, and working with community partners to advocate for incarcerated individuals. The ideal candidate will have experience in litigating civil rights cases and working with other legal professionals, as well as strong writing and analysis skills.
