The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides free legal information, advice and representation to low-income individuals in thirteen counties in New York. JOB SUMMARY:
LASMNY is seeking full-time Staff Attorneys for their Eviction Defense Program. These positions are available immediately in the office of your choice. The Staff Attorneys will report to the Managing Attorney and provide comprehensive legal services to eligible clients, including advice, negotiation, motion practice, discovery, and litigation. They will also offer holistic representation to clients with financial hardships that could result in loss of housing. The Staff Attorneys will travel to city, town, and village courts in the region for eviction and warranty of habitability cases.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provide direct legal services to eligible clients - Offer holistic representation to clients with financial hardships - Appear in city, town, and village courts for eviction and warranty of habitability cases - Maintain accurate records and statistics for timely reports - Communicate and interview applicants/clients over the phone or in person - Prepare and file legal documents - Independently manage a caseload - Manage data related to grant reporting process - Record billable time and case notes in the case management system - Collaborate professionally with colleagues, judges, opposing counsel, and community members - Stay updated on legal developments through Continuing Legal Education courses - Engage in outreach and education efforts - Attend meetings and trainings as required - Comply with LSC and LASMNY regulations and policies - Perform assigned responsibilities and duties based on department needs
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Law degree from an accredited law school - New York State Bar admission - Prior legal services, trial, and litigation experience preferred - Demonstrated commitment to serving indigent community members preferred - Proficient in Microsoft Office and computerized legal research - Bilingual or multilingual a plus - Travel required
