The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides free legal information, advice, and representation to individuals who cannot afford a lawyer. With a focus on thirteen counties in New York, LASMNY also offers services to agricultural workers throughout the state. Their mission is to assist low-income individuals facing civil legal problems that impact their basic needs and to target specific vulnerable populations, such as seniors, victims of domestic violence, and refugees, with their services.

JOB SUMMARY

The Managing Attorney for Pro Bono Programs at LASMNY is responsible for overseeing the Private Attorney Involvement Plan (PAI) for their thirteen county service area. This position works closely with the executive team to ensure compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and LASMNY regulations, policies, and procedures. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of and commitment to LASMNY's mission and values.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Administer LASMNY's PAI Plan.
• Recruit, train, and supervise pro bono staff, including attorneys and paralegals.
• Collaborate with courts, bar associations, and community partners to develop pro bono programs.
• Keep up-to-date with legal developments and complete Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses.
• Implement and administer pro bono programs, such as clinics and CLE programs.
• Provide pro bono reports for grant and CLE reporting.
• Write grants to fund pro bono endeavors.
• Administer pro bono attorney rewards and recognition programs.
• Recruit law students, law graduates, and paralegals to support pro bono programs.
• Travel to other LASMNY office locations as needed.
• Collaborate with the executive team to develop and implement policies and procedures.
• Manage recruitment, supervision, professional development, and case assignments for staff.
• Maintain accurate records and statistics for timely reporting.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with clients and stakeholders.
• Record billable time and case notes accurately in the case management system.
• Serve as a signatory on checks and ensure the fiscal integrity of LASMNY funds.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues and community members.
• Engage in outreach and community education.
• Attend meetings and trainings as requested.
• Comply with all LSC and LASMNY regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the supervisor.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Law degree from an accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice in NYS or eligible for admission on motion.
• Minimum of five years of experience in the practice of law.
• Experience in legal services preferred.
• Working experience in a union environment preferred.
• Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and training less experienced attorneys.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and computerized legal research.
• Fluency in other languages is a plus.
• Valid NYS driver's license or ability to obtain one if required.
