Managing Attorney

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York (LASMNY) is seeking a Managing Staff Attorney for our Syracuse, NY office. This position offers a competitive salary range of $89,161 - $110,540 annually, depending on experience. The Managing Staff Attorney will be responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of LASMNY’s Syracuse, Oswego & Watertown offices, under the direction of the Executive Director. This is a full-time position with a non-profit public interest law firm, providing free legal assistance to low-income people facing civil legal problems. The successful candidate will have a law degree from an accredited law school, be admitted to the New York State Bar, and have a minimum of five years of experience in the practice of law. Experience in legal services and working in a union environment is preferred. The Managing Staff Attorney will also have experience in direct supervision of attorneys engaged in litigation practice and developing litigation strategies, as well as exceptional skills in drafting complex legal documents and conducting trials. The position requires travel and may also require bilingual or multilingual abilities.

Key Responsibilities:

- Manage and supervise the day-to-day administration and litigation of designated branch offices and programs in order to provide high-quality legal services to clients
- Collaborate with executive team to develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards for legal work
- Recruit, supervise, and manage professional development of staff in designated branch office and program
- Maintain accurate records and statistics for timely reporting
- Manage data related to grant reporting process
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with clients/applicants for services
- Conduct interviews with clients in an objective and competent manner
- Provide legal advice and representation in civil cases to eligible individuals
- Prepare and file legal documents, such as pleadings, motions, and briefs
- Independently manage a caseload
- Record billable time and case notes accurately and timely
- Ensure fiscal integrity of LASMNY funds by serving as a signatory on checks
- Work professionally and collaboratively with colleagues, judges, opposing counsel, court personnel, community members, and other stakeholders
- Demonstrate commitment to professional growth and staying updated on legal developments through Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses
- Engage in outreach and community education efforts
- Attend and participate in meetings and trainings as required
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance

Job Qualifications:

- Law degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to the New York State Bar
- Minimum of five years of experience in the practice of law
- Experience in legal services preferred
- Working experience in a union environment preferred
- Direct supervision experience of attorneys engaged in litigation practice strongly preferred
- Experience developing litigation strategies
- Exceptional skills in drafting complex legal documents, conducting depositions, and trial work
- Demonstrated commitment and experience in mentoring and training less-experienced attorneys
- Proficient in Microsoft Office or related software and computerized legal research
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities a plus
- Willingness to travel
