Experience Information:

- 2 years (Associate Claims Examiner) or 7 years (Claims Examiner) of relevant experience handling general liability/casualty/excess matters
- Prior experience as an examiner, adjuster, paralegal, or in another transferable role
- Excess liability experience, multi-jurisdictional knowledge, advanced degrees, and/or JD are a plus

Minimum Job Requirements:

- 2 years (Associate Claims Examiner) or 7 years (Claims Examiner) of relevant experience handling general liability/casualty/excess matters
- Prior experience as an examiner, adjuster, paralegal, or in another transferable role
- Excess liability experience, multi-jurisdictional knowledge, advanced degrees, and/or JD are a plus

Essential Functions:

- Confirm coverage by reviewing first notice of loss, checking available systems, and interpreting policy language
- Prepare initial position letters to policyholder, such as disclaimers and reservation of rights
- Conduct thorough investigation of claim, including securing facts, statements, documents, and identifying joint tortfeasors and witnesses
- Post, review, and maintain reserves to accurately reflect liability and damage evaluation
- Proactively manage files to final disposition through effective diary, direction to defense counsel and independent adjusters, and analysis and strategy for negotiated settlement or trial
- Document file activity in claim notes
- Communicate regularly with delivery of comprehensive and concise authority requests, reinsurance reports, serious loss reports, coverage position letters, and appropriate communication with underwriting and actuary

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

- Support customer service by responding promptly to phone and email both internally and externally
- Adhere to established claim service promises
- Complete special projects as assigned
- Enroll in continuing education to maintain state licenses and support professional and personal development
- Some travel required for mediations and court hearings
