Job Title: Claims Examiner or Associate Claims Examiner - Specialty Claims Oak Brook IL Experience Information: - 2 years (Associate Claims Examiner) or 7 years (Claims Examiner) of relevant experience handling general liability/casualty/excess matters - Prior experience as an examiner, adjuster, paralegal, or in another transferable role - Excess liability experience, multi-jurisdictional knowledge, advanced degrees, and/or JD are a plus Job Description: - Seeking analytical and creative problem solver with ability to identify key issues for coverage, liability, and damage evaluation - Assertive decision maker with strong negotiation and conflict management skills - Ongoing challenges and opportunities for learning and growth in a unique claims environment - Regular interaction with underwriting, compliance, and actuarial teams - Responsible for confirming coverage, conducting thorough investigations, and managing files to final disposition - Strong communication skills and technical knowledge of insurance coverage and claim evaluation - Some travel required for mediations and court hearings - Support for customer service and completion of special projects - Enrollment in continuing education to maintain state licenses and support professional and personal development - Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the company and community Salary Information: - $50,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications Benefits: - Comprehensive benefits package for full-time community members - Access to wellness programs and continuing education resources - Opportunities to get involved with charitable organizations - Team-building activities and events hosted by the Fun Committee, community service days, and department outings Location: Oak Brook, IL Team: Claims Job Type: Full Time FT/PT Status: Full Time Specific Skills: - Strong oral and written communication skills - Insightful analytical skills - Effective negotiation skills - Strong organizational and time management skills - Technical knowledge of insurance coverage, negligence law, and claim evaluation Minimum Job Requirements: - 2 years (Associate Claims Examiner) or 7 years (Claims Examiner) of relevant experience handling general liability/casualty/excess matters - Prior experience as an examiner, adjuster, paralegal, or in another transferable role - Excess liability experience, multi-jurisdictional knowledge, advanced degrees, and/or JD are a plus Essential Functions: - Confirm coverage by reviewing first notice of loss, checking available systems, and interpreting policy language - Prepare initial position letters to policyholder, such as disclaimers and reservation of rights - Conduct thorough investigation of claim, including securing facts, statements, documents, and identifying joint tortfeasors and witnesses - Post, review, and maintain reserves to accurately reflect liability and damage evaluation - Proactively manage files to final disposition through effective diary, direction to defense counsel and independent adjusters, and analysis and strategy for negotiated settlement or trial - Document file activity in claim notes - Communicate regularly with delivery of comprehensive and concise authority requests, reinsurance reports, serious loss reports, coverage position letters, and appropriate communication with underwriting and actuary Other Duties and Responsibilities: - Support customer service by responding promptly to phone and email both internally and externally - Adhere to established claim service promises - Complete special projects as assigned - Enroll in continuing education to maintain state licenses and support professional and personal development - Some travel required for mediations and court hearings USLI is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our company and community.
