Housing Attorney
Ithaca, NY Organization Information - **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** (LawNY®) is a non-profit law firm providing free civil legal services to low-income clients in Western New York, Finger Lakes, and Southern Tier. - LawNY® has seven fully staffed field offices, satellite offices, and a business office. - Committed to equitable inclusion and creating a diverse and respectful workplace. - Encourages applications from underrepresented groups. Responsibilities - Provide direct legal representation primarily in landlord-tenant matters to at-risk residents in Tompkins and Tioga County. - Handle related government benefits and subsidized housing matters. - Grow and adapt practice to community and organization needs. - Actively engage in learning and becoming skilled in practice that supports diversity, equity, and inclusion vision. Qualifications - Admitted to practice and in good standing in New York State or eligible for admission without examination. - Demonstrated commitment to service for low-income people. Additional Traits and Skills - Litigation and advocacy experience in state and/or federal court and/or administrative forums in poverty law areas. - Incorporates anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens into legal practice. - Understands concepts of structural and institutional racism and their impact on underserved communities. - Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to trauma-informed services. - Lived experience with client communities. - True fluency in a language other than English spoken by clients. Compensation - Dependent on experience and based on pay scale with annual increments. - Beginning salary for Staff Attorney: $70,000; 10 years experience: $84,400. - Qualifying employer for public interest loan forgiveness program.
