Job Title: Legal Intern
Experience: Law school enrollment or recent graduation
Salary: $18.00 per hour, bi-weekly pay
Location: Indianapolis, IN (hybrid internship with some in-person work and flexibility for remote work)
Department: ILS Lawyer in the School Project

ILS is a statewide, not-for-profit law firm that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through 8 branch offices. The organization is funded by various sources including the Legal Services Corporation and United Ways.

The Legal Internship is part of the ILS Lawyer in the School Project, which offers free civil legal aid on-site at Indianapolis schools. The project focuses on assisting eligible families with housing stability, driver’s license reinstatement, criminal record expungement, and public benefit issues. The intern will have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of clients and gain hands-on experience in various legal areas.

Responsibilities:

- Attend outreach events and community outreach events
- Conduct intakes and interact with clients and community partners
- Draft pleadings and correspondence
- Research and writing
- Attend hearings, meetings, and trainings
- Strategize with ILS attorneys on individual cases

Qualifications:

- Dedication to ILS's mission of using the law to fight poverty and racism
- Enrollment in law school or recent graduation
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Willingness to learn and work collaboratively
- Ability to comply with ILS policies and procedures
- Trial practice, professional ethics course completion, and certified legal intern status are helpful but not required
