The New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs is seeking an Assistant Counsel to join our dynamic team. As a member of our Office of General Counsel, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of over one million New Yorkers under our care or jurisdiction. The Justice Center, established in 2013 by the Protection with Special Needs Act, is responsible for protecting individuals with special needs across six State Oversight Agencies. Our mission is to promote and protect the rights, health, and safety of vulnerable individuals through a comprehensive and integrated approach. Key Responsibilities: • Analyze, interpret, and apply laws related to the work of the Justice Center • Review and assess evidence gathered during investigations of allegations of abuse or neglect in facilities serving individuals with special needs • Draft legal determinations and consult with Justice Center investigators • Conduct statewide training for Justice Center and State Oversight Agency staff • Defend agency determinations and legal positions in administrative proceedings • Prepare evidence and witnesses for testimony • Input and review case information in the Justice Center's Vulnerable Persons Central Registry (VPCR) Minimum Qualifications: • Admission to the New York State Bar and a member in good standing • 2 years of post-admission trial and/or hearing experience before courts of record or in administrative proceedings • Commitment to public service and strong research and writing skills Benefits: • Competitive salary range from $90931 to $114940 annually • Full-time, permanent position with a flexible work schedule • Telecommuting allowed with supervisor approval • Travel opportunities within the state (20%) • Comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off • Opportunities for professional growth and development Join our team and make a meaningful impact on the lives of vulnerable individuals in New York State.
