Staff Attorney—Remote: Providing Legal Services and Promoting Justice for Low-Income Communities

WHO WE ARE:

Founded in 1966, California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting for justice and individual rights alongside the most exploited communities in our society. Through a network of regional offices and cross-cutting programs, CRLA provides legal services to tens of thousands of low-income individuals and families annually. Our work impacts farmworkers, indigenous populations, individuals with disabilities, immigrant communities, LGBTQ individuals, women, and children in rural areas.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and skilled Staff Attorney to join our team. POSITION DETAILS:

Job Title: Staff Attorney—Remote
Experience: 6 months experience
Application Deadline: Open until filled
Location: Remote—proximity to any CRLA office a plus, but not required
Term of Employment: Long term (fully funded through December 2024, with continued funding expected)
Other: FLSA Exempt, Union Position

As a Staff Attorney, you will report to the Tenant Justice Project Supervising Litigation Attorneys and provide comprehensive housing-related legal services to eligible clients. This includes advising, negotiating, and litigating on behalf of low-income tenants in accordance with CRLA program guidelines, the ABA Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services, and the Code of Professional Responsibility. This is a unique opportunity to use your legal skills to make a positive impact in the lives of those most in need.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a Staff Attorney, you will:

Provide legal services to low-income clients in housing matters, including unlawful detainers and landlord/tenant disputes.
Assist callers with housing matters through a multi-office legal advice hotline.
Review and supervise the work of Community Workers and Support Staff in relation to clients being advised or represented in housing matters.
Collaborate with other Tenant Justice Project staff attorneys to represent tenants in unlawful detainer matters.
Develop leadership in working with the community, clients, and other advocacy groups on housing impact issues.
Participate in training, case reviews, staff meetings, and other CRLA activities.
Educate the community on housing legal rights.
Collaborate with members of the private bar as necessary.
Maintain accurate time records.
Maintain positive relationships with all staff.
Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & QUALITIES:

Our ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and qualities:

Required Education and Experience

Admitted to practice law in the State of CA, eligible for California’s Provisionally Licensed Lawyer program, or eligible to practice as a Registered Legal Services Attorney, or admitted before the court of any state and willing to take the next CA bar.
Demonstrated commitment to working with low-income clients.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
Strong people skills, empathy, patience, and the ability to work with a diverse population.

Preferred Education and Experience

A highly qualified and desirable candidate would also have the following:

Experience working with low-income families and communities.
Experience in a non-profit legal services environment.
Prior experience in legal services and additional language ability relevant.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

At CRLA, we offer a diverse, family-friendly environment and a competitive salary based on public interest rates. Our generous benefits package includes 100% employer-covered medical, dental, vision, life, and short & long-term disability insurance for employees and up to 50% for dependents coverage. We also offer a 401K retirement plan with CRLA contribution, effective immediately. Some professional dues, such as bar fees, are covered by CRLA. Additionally, for qualified candidates, we offer up to $6,000 in law school Loan Reimbursement Assistance. Our generous paid leave policy includes 15 days of sick leave, 15 holidays each year, and vacation time that accrues at a rate of 15 days for the first year of service and 20 days after one year of service at CRLA. This is a union position (Legal Service Workers for Rural California "LSWRC"), and the salary ranges from $65,500 to $90,000, depending on each year of admission to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction and any relevant law-related work experience prior to being admitted to practice law.
