Rural Justice Initiative Clerkship Program Law Clerk 1

Full-Time, At-Will Positions in Farmington & Aztec or Gallup, NM

Salary: $75,000 annually

Overview:

The New Mexico Judicial Branch is currently seeking two full-time, at-will Law Clerk 1 positions for the Rural Justice Initiative Clerkship program in Farmington & Aztec or Gallup, New Mexico. These positions will provide research, writing, and other assistance to district court judges at the district court level. The selected candidates may also have the opportunity to assist with other court programs and interact with the local legal community. These positions are part of a two-year program designed to inspire new lawyers to practice law in rural communities and provide practical on-the-job training, hands-on experience, and community engagement opportunities. The salary for these positions is $75,000 per year, with all judicial branch benefits included.

Responsibilities:

- Review cases, analyze briefs, records, and legal authorities cited
- Prepare legal drafts and process complaints, declarations, discovery requests, and other pleadings
- Evaluate legal arguments by researching laws, statutes, regulations, court opinions, and precedents
- Assist with oral arguments and "briefs-only" conferences
- Assemble case materials and maintain calendar
- Perform legal research and analysis
- Prepare bench memos and recommend court calendaring
- Assist with in-court functions and processes
- Review and analyze records and transcripts
- Draft legal documents and discuss confidential issues with justices or judges
- Participate in special projects, presentations, and training

Qualifications:

- Graduate of a law school accredited by the American Bar Association
- One year of experience performing legal research, analysis, writing, and editing
- Knowledge of legal terminology, Code of Judicial Conduct, Rules of Professional Conduct, and court jurisdiction and operations
- Familiarity with manual and computerized legal research
- Strong understanding of legal analysis and writing
- Ability to interact positively with co-workers, clients, the public, and judges and justices
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime

● Process complaints, declarations, discovery requests, responses, and other pleadings
● Evaluate the merits of legal arguments by researching laws, statutes, constitutions, regulations, court opinions, and precedents
● Analyze and assess the impact of applicable law
● Assist in preparing for oral arguments, and “briefs-only” conferences
● Assemble case materials by collecting, organizing, and summarizing information, documents, reports, and evidence
● Maintain calendar by entering and updating requirements, court dates, and meetings
● Perform legal research
