Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is a nonprofit organization that provides civil legal assistance to low-income and marginalized individuals and communities in Maryland. They have been serving the state since 1911 and are dedicated to preserving basic human needs and rights for their clients. MLA relies on the support of staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters to ensure equal access to justice for those in need.

MLA is currently seeking a full-time paralegal for their Lower Eastern Shore office in Salisbury, MD. The selected candidate will work under the supervision of an attorney and assist with all aspects of casework, from initial intake to trial preparation. This may involve collaborating with other legal professionals, conducting interviews and investigations, drafting legal documents, and participating in community outreach and education initiatives.

Job Duties:

- Screen clients for eligibility and make referrals as needed
- Conduct interviews with clients
- Conduct factual investigations and legal research
- Maintain case records in LegalServer
- Draft legal documents and correspondence
- Attend outreach events in the community
- Continuously develop and improve skills through training programs

Qualifications:

- Proficiency with computers and web-based applications
- Excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to providing quality legal advocacy for low-income clients
- Willingness to travel locally and regionally in Maryland
- Previous experience in nonprofit legal services is a plus
- Fluency in a foreign language is highly desirable
- Paralegal certification or equivalent experience is desired

Work Environment:

Paralegals will be compensated according to MLA's current salary scale, which is subject to revision through collective bargaining negotiations. Additional compensation is available for those with higher education degrees or foreign language competencies.
