Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is seeking a passionate and dedicated Staff Attorney to join our team in Baltimore County, MD. Job Summary:

As a Staff Attorney at Maryland Legal Aid, you will handle a wide array of legal advocacy for low-income individuals, with an emphasis on family law cases. This includes conducting client interviews, conducting factual investigations and legal research, drafting legal documents, and representing clients during negotiations and in hearings, trials, appeals, and administrative proceedings. You will also be expected to participate in Legal Aid Task Forces and other internal and external committees.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Screen clients for eligibility and make appropriate referrals
- Conduct client interviews and provide counsel regarding their options
- Conduct factual investigations and legal research
- Draft pleadings, memoranda of law, briefs, etc.
- Develop case theory and strategy for client representation
- Represent clients during negotiations and in court proceedings
- Attend Legal Aid sponsored trainings and programs
- Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
- Admitted to practice in the State of Maryland or eligible for admission
- Knowledge of civil law, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence
- Proficiency in computer and web-based applications, including Microsoft Office 365
- Excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills
- Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to provide quality legal advocacy for low-income, diverse clients
- Willingness to travel locally and regionally in Maryland as needed

Work Environment:

As a Staff Attorney at Maryland Legal Aid, you will work in a general office setting with occasional in-person interactions and flexible remote work options. Some work duties may be performed in community settings.

Salary and Benefits:

Staff Attorneys at Maryland Legal Aid are paid in accordance with our Workers Union's current salary scale, which is subject to annual revision through collective bargaining negotiations. In addition, we offer a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer contributions, 2 weeks of paid time off, sick leave, 14 annual paid holidays, and a hybrid work arrangement.
