SMRLS is a non-profit law firm dedicated to providing free legal assistance to low-income and elderly individuals residing in 33 counties of southern Minnesota. With a rich history dating back to 1909, SMRLS has established a tradition of partnering with the private bar, legislature, and other legal aid programs to ensure access to justice for all. As a Staff Attorney in Family Law, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of low-income individuals by providing legal assistance in contested family law matters. This includes handling cases involving custody, domestic abuse, and other family law issues. You will also have the chance to represent clients in court proceedings throughout SMRLS' Southwest service area, which includes 17 counties in southern Minnesota.

In addition to your legal responsibilities, you will also engage in community education and outreach, as well as intake activities. Active participation in the bar is also required. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, the ability to work effectively with diverse clients, and a strong commitment to SMRLS' mission. You must also be willing to accept supervision and take on additional duties as assigned.

To be considered for this position, you must be licensed to practice law in Minnesota and have a minimum of 2 years of family law practice or related legal training. Experience working with low-income clients, victims of domestic abuse, and individuals from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds is highly preferred. You must also be willing and able to travel to court proceedings, outreach/education activities, and other SMRLS-required events throughout the service area. Computer competence is also necessary.
