JOB OVERVIEW UC is one of the largest employers in the Cincinnati region, employing over 15,000 full time and part time faculty, staff and student workers. The College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, is recruiting for a full-time (100% FTE) Nurse Practitioner for the nurse lead of the Diabetes Now program. As a member of the Diabetes Now transdisciplinary team and nurse leader, this individual will participate in system-wide oversight and development of all practices related to inpatient diabetes and glycemic management. This position will support the University's mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS *Responsible for provider and associate diabetes education as well as oversight of patient education. *Protocols, procedures and policies related to inpatient diabetes management (e.g., hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, DKA) *Collection, review, and interpretation of data relevant to inpatient diabetes management (e.g., hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, DKA) *Utilization of clinical practice guidelines, and standards of care as designated by the ADA (American Diabetes Association), and collaboration with primary diabetes providers in providing quality care to patients presenting with diabetes and glycemic disorders. *Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team, providing informal consultation and education as needed and develops/trains system-wide Diabetes Resource Specialists to do the same. *Demonstrates leadership through development and coordination of programs to improve quality of care and organizational processes. An example would be the development of a diabetes champions program to build expertise among staff on each unit. *Serves as a subject matter expert on diabetes-related issues for performance improvement initiatives and programs system-wide *Monitors compliance with diabetes performance measures and quality metrics in the UCMC inpatient population *Serves as a liaison between the Diabetes Now program and nursing, medicine, pharmacy, administration and other areas as needed. *Collaborates with members of the EPIC team and pharmacy to develop and refine evidence-based protocols, order sets, and ensure that they are standardized at the enterprise level *Responsible for review preparation by Joint Commission for Advanced Disease Specific Care Certification in Inpatient Diabetes Care *Collaborates with Sweet Transitions Nurse Practitioner and diabetes education. *Along with core members of transdisciplinary team provides leadership of weekly meetings. *Perform appropriate history and physical for complex, acute, critical, and chronically ill patients. *Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests. *Manage common episodic and chronic illnesses and administer medication and treatments as prescribed. Obtain treatment consents as needed. *Monitor the effectiveness of interventions. *Maintain accurate medical records. *Collaborate with other providers and members of the health care team in delivery of care and make appropriate referrals when needed. *Educate patients and families about medical conditions and treatment plans. *Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision making using evidence-based practice. *Participate in research and development projects. *Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time. REQUIRED EDUCATION Master's Degree in Nursing and graduation from an ANA approved Nurse Practitioner Program. REQUIRED TRAININGS/CERTIFICATIONS *Current/valid RN and APN license/license eligible to practice in the state of Ohio. *May require certification in corresponding specialty. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE *Three (3) years nursing experience. *Additional related work experience may be required depending on specialty/sub-specialty. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS CONSIDERED *Two (2) years of experience working with patients that have complex medical issues. *Experience working and treating patients with diabetes and diabetes related health issues. *Comfortable with public speaking and presenting in front of large groups.
