Drilling Supervisor


The Drilling Supervisor ensures that offshore operations are executed as per the well specific program, local regulations, Client management system (Policies and Standards), and safely as per Client HSE expectations.
The Drilling Supervisor is the senior Client operations representative offshore and will act as the point of contact for Emergency Response.
Key contacts and relationships include: Drilling Superintendent, Drilling Supervisor(s), Drilling Engineer(s), Logistics Coordinator, Offshore HS&E Advisors, Rig Contractor Offshore Personnel, and Service Company Offshore Personnel.
This role will report to the Atlantic Canada Drilling Superintendent.
Work to foster an offshore safety culture and ensure that all HSE matters are properly managed, reported, documented, and communicated.
Ensure the two barrier wellbore philosophy is maintained as per Client standards.
Ensure that Client assurance activities are completed offshore.
Strive for continuous operational improvement. Utilize ProNova to track drilling KPIs and identify areas for improvement.
Provide written detailed drilling procedures (work instructions) to the offshore crews. Ensure that drilling contractor personnel are aware of the well objectives and contents of the drilling program, and that all operations are conducted in a manner which will deliver these objectives.
Keep the Drilling Superintendent fully informed of ongoing operations, including possible delays, threats and opportunities.
Work with the OIM to ensure that drilling contractor personnel are competent and aware of their responsibilities.
Work with the Drilling Superintendent to ensure that forward planning is applied with respect to ice management and adverse weather.
Ensure that risk management principles are applied and specific risks are mitigated / managed.
Ensure that “T” times are calculated in conjunction with rig contractor for pending weather impacts.
When operations are required to deviate from the written drilling program, ensure that the Drilling Superintendent is fully informed and that amendments (and MOC if required) are received in writing at the rig site; furthermore, verify that appropriate risk assessment is conducted prior to proceeding with the amended program.
Supervise and manage Service Company offshore personnel.
Monitor stock levels of critical materials (e.g. Barite and Cement) to maintain levels above minimum volumes required for contingencies and upcoming operations.
Liaise with the Logistics Coordinator to ensure that boat and helicopter requirements are understood and meet the needs of the operation (e.g. avoid NPT due to waiting on personnel, materials or equipment to be delivered to the Rig).
Be responsible for producing and distributing the Daily Drilling Report to the Client office.
Provide coaching and mentoring for less experienced personnel on both the offshore and onshore teams. Attend onshore and Offshore training as provided by Company
Ensure compliance to the rig contract.
Qualifications Required
University Diploma or alternate acceptable experience based qualifications
Current certification required in Well Control Training, Subsea BOP Stack qualification, Supervisor level.
Current CAPP certification required for offshore travel.
15 years in the offshore drilling, 5 years deepwater experience, with 5 years superintendent experience.
Exploration drilling experience. Harsh weather experience. Deepwater experience.
Knowledgeable in deepwater MODU limitations and capabilities, including optimization solutions to improve project performance, while ensuring well objectives are delivered safely and efficiently
Effective in applying contractor management principles.
Knowledgeable in deepwater well control equipment and operations.
Can demonstrate experience with risk management techniques and process safety concepts in terms of effectively delivering wells.
The Senior Drilling Supervisor must be Fit for Duty and currently able to travel internationally and to offshore facilities without restriction.
