Controller (Remote in US)

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and Accounting, the Controller directly oversees Treasury functions and will supervise the Assistant Controller managing Payroll and Accounts Payable functions. The Controller will oversee **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** banking relationships, investments, and cash management functions. the Controller will develop policies and processes to provide optimal cash management while ensuring sufficient cash for all operational needs and report on global foreign exchange exposure risk. This position will support the Finance and Accounting management team and serve as back-up to the Senior Director of Accounting during absence. 

LOGISTICS

Internews has US offices in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC which support a hybrid workforce with staff working remotely, fully in-office, or partially remote. This is a remote-based role, and candidates based anywhere in the United States will be considered. Our ideal candidate is based in the Pacific time zone.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include: 

Reporting (Internal and External) 

Provide Senior Management Investment Accounts on a quarterly basis. 
Design foreign exchange risk reports for Senior Management and Board.
Support in the development of financial KPIs and maintain the management of working capital. 
Develop a cash flow report that includes projections for daily, monthly, and annual usage. 

Planning, Budgeting & Analysis

Ensure sufficient funds are available to meet ongoing operational and capital investment requirements. 
Ensure allocations are processed accurately. 

Accounting

Provide accounting oversight and direct accounting operations, including corporate AP, corporate payroll, and support for in-country payment teams. 
Oversee accounting policies and procedures, including identifying and implementing improvements as well as evaluating localized customization. 
Collaborate in the development and introduction of accounting processes and procedures for continuous improvement of accounting methods. 
Maintain current knowledge of GAAP, International Accounting Principles, and OMB Rules and Regulations. 
Review disbursement and journal entries to ensure proper coding and approvals.
Ensure various accounting schedules such as prepaids and accrued expenses are accurate and completed timely. 
Ensure month end and year end closing entries and processes, including reconciliation of bank accounts and general ledger balance sheet accounts.
Process monthly revaluation entries.
Ensure DBA Audit and Reconciliations are completely timely. 
System Administrator User to provide approval for Timesheets on behalf of supervisors. 

Treasury

Oversee Treasury management activities including monitoring and projecting cash needs and general bank account management.
Serve as the primary contact with investment advisors to ensure alignment with investment policy, recommend funding for enough cash flow, review monthly returns, and assess manager performance. 
Oversee and manage corporate relationships with payment processing banks to facilitate payments and streamline operations. 
Manage the preparation and administration of bank account documentation related to corporate resolutions, bank service agreements, and authorized signatories. 
Manage and reconcile operational bank accounts. 
Increase banking relationships locally with CitiBank to leverage World Link platform. 
Responsible for ensuring corporate credit card processing costs are reasonable and have the lowest rates available. 
Administrator for HQ bank accounts. 
Act as secondary authorized signatory on all HQ bank accounts. 
Process daily cash positioning activities including managing daily liquidity, cash position reconciliation, and bank reporting. 
Develop a foreign exchange / currency mechanism to mitigate currency exposure to manage risk. 

Program Finance Support

Collaborate with program management team to resolve accounting issues, including oversight through delegates of country office support.
Support local finance teams in reviewing banking terms to reduce losses and assess risk due to foreign exchange rates.

Strategic Financial Management

Review and propose action to be taken for identified financial and business risk situations; participate in the continuous improvement of accounting processes.
Develop treasury reporting dashboards appropriate for various stakeholders and track KPI.
Manage excess operating cash to obtain optimal interest revenue. 
Explore expense reduction and revenue opportunities with payment processing banks. 
Ensure enhancements to payroll processes to increase efficiency. 

General Management

Supervise the Assistant Controller.
Develop accounting priorities for staff, including goal setting and meeting timelines. 
Provide leadership, mentorship, team planning, and workflow support to increase cohesion and communication. 
Serve as an alternate manager for Finance and Accounting team in absence of Director of Accounting. 
Authorized to provide exception request approval to HQ Finance policies.  

Audit

Ensure reconciliations are adequately completed and filed for annual audit.
Provide feedback and justification for audit related requests.
Ensure schedules are completed for Audit and support any audit related requests.

Training

Provide training and support to staff.
Train on World Link Citibank platform as needed.
Develop training webinars and/or modules relevant to HQ finance teams. 
Responsible for hiring and training directly supervised and account support staff, performance appraisals, and appropriate corrective actions.
Represent Internews with external audiences as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required

University degree in Finance or Accounting OR equivalent lived/professional experience. 
Minimum 10 years' relevant prior work experience, including prior finance and accounting experience with a non-profit organization, multi-state payroll, and accounts payable functions.
Advanced knowledge of Treasury functions. 
Demonstrated knowledge of experience in fund accounting mechanisms.
Native-level proficiency in English. 
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with experience operating effectively in a multicultural and remote work environment. 
Strong project management skills.
Flexibility to adjust working hours as needed to accommodate periodic shifts in workload and colleagues in different time zones. 
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. 
Experience assessing potential risk management strategies according to fundamental and technical considerations. 
Experience in or working knowledge of asset/liability management. 
Demonstrated ability to manage personnel, work with peers in a collaborative environment, and support senior management. 
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with sound judgement, tact, and discretion. 

Preferred

Prior experience working for an international nonprofit or in the international development sector.
CFA, CTP, CMT, or similar certification. 
Master's degree in finance or a related field.
