- Supervising attorney position with Farmworker Legal Services (FLS) in Kalamazoo, Michigan - Seeking an experienced attorney with a demonstrated commitment to advocating for low-income or immigrant communities - Will work closely with FLS attorneys, staff, and other providers to develop and pursue systemic litigation and community outreach efforts - Handle cases, provide supervisory support to team members, and assist in directing the legal work of FLS
MAP Farmworker Legal Services:
- Non-profit law office and statewide division of Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP) - Fights for justice and dignity alongside the farmworker community through legal advocacy, community engagement, and direct representation - Currently has 7 permanent staff and 7 seasonal advocates in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, and Ypsilanti offices - Provides civil legal services to Michigan's migrant and seasonal farmworkers, prioritizing cases such as wage theft, trafficking, discrimination, and workplace health and safety
Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP):
- Works to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of those affected by poverty, racism, and other oppressive systems - Provides civil legal aid for those unable to afford an attorney for over 50 years - Manages 6 statewide programs, including Farmworker Legal Services, Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, and Michigan Elder Justice Initiative - Staff of about 220 people in offices across Michigan
Required Qualifications:
- Must be licensed to practice law in Michigan or qualify for admission by waiver - 5 years of experience in low-income or immigrant communities - Experience with state or federal litigation or immigration affirmative applications - Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including travel and evening/weekend outreach - Demonstrated success working effectively in diverse teams - Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills - Commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and FLS's mission
Preferred Qualifications:
- Priority given to applicants with 10 years of experience in mission-aligned, supervisory, litigation, or immigration work - Experience supervising diverse teams and projects - Knowledge of labor-based immigration relief - Experience with negotiating, filing administrative complaints, and litigating employment claims - Proficiency in Spanish and English, or Haitian Creole or indigenous languages native to Mexico or Central America - Familiarity with farmworker advocacy, employment and immigration law, or legal services and advocacy
