Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) is seeking an experienced attorney to join their Public Benefits Unit as a Supervising Attorney for the Housing-Public Benefits Initiative. LSNYC is the largest civil legal services provider in the country, with over 600 staff members in neighborhood-based offices and outreach sites across all five boroughs. They partner with community-based organizations, elected officials, public agencies, pro bono lawyers, and the courts to maximize their effectiveness in fighting discrimination and achieving equity for low-income New Yorkers.
The Housing-Related Benefits Practice of the Public Benefits Unit currently consists of more than 15 advocates who work to retain, obtain, or increase public benefits for clients. The Supervising Attorney will shape the direction of the Universal Access to Counsel housing-related public benefits practice, handle administrative and grant responsibilities, and identify systemic benefits-related trends for strategic litigation.
Key responsibilities of the Supervising Attorney include supervising a team of 5-7 advocates, strengthening relationships with community-based organizations, collaborating with the Housing Unit, carrying a caseload, and helping create and conduct a training program for public benefits advocates. The ideal candidate is a creative social justice attorney with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and a passion for creating systemic change.
Applicants must be licensed to practice law in New York and have significant experience in public benefits. Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by NYC residents is preferred.
