Legal Aid Organization in Washington, DC is seeking an experienced Supervising Attorney for their Domestic Violence & Family Law Unit. This is a full-time position with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience required. The salary for this position ranges from $117,559 to $121,458 per year, with the potential for salary increases twice a year.
The Supervising Attorney will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated team of attorneys, legal assistants, and intake specialists to provide individual representation in consumer law, domestic violence/family law, housing, public benefits, and appellate matters. They will also have the chance to identify opportunities for law reform, public policy advocacy, and systemic impact and appellate litigation based on the experiences of their clients.

As a Supervising Attorney, the responsibilities will include providing routine supervision and feedback for attorneys and other staff, attending hearings to provide support and guidance, and participating in annual performance management processes. They will also work closely with the Managing Attorney and supervisor colleagues to manage pro bono mentorship, identify training opportunities, and set priorities for Unit case handling.
In collaboration with the Managing Attorney and the Director of the Barbara McDowell Appellate Project, the Supervising Attorney will monitor and participate in discussions or conduct appellate cases with a potential impact on domestic violence or family law. They will also work with the Managing Attorney and the Director of Policy Advocacy to identify and advance policy goals to address systemic issues affecting domestic violence survivors, custodial parents, and low-income child support obligors.
In addition to their responsibilities within the Unit, the Supervising Attorney will also play a role in the leadership of the organization. This includes supervising intake and conflict clearance, considering the impact of proposed organization-wide policies or actions on the DV/Family Law Unit, and participating in organization-wide discussions and initiatives.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a minimum of seven years of experience in legal services, with a demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice. They should also have significant experience in managing a litigation practice and the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and organizational responsibilities. Proficiency or fluency in Spanish, Amharic or another language spoken by our client community is preferred but not required.
