The Cullen and Dykman Summer Associate Program has been offering law school students valuable experience and training for over 40 years. This 10-week program provides challenging assignments, training, mentorship, and networking opportunities for students after their second year of law school. Our program is designed to give summer associates a real sense of what it's like to work as a first-year associate at our law firm and we strive to extend full-time positions to those who excel during the program.
Challenging Work Assignments and Feedback
One of the key components of our Summer Associate Program is the variety of challenging work assignments that our summer associates have the opportunity to work on. These assignments cover a range of practice areas and allow summer associates to work with different attorneys throughout our offices in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. From legal research to drafting legal briefs, summer associates gain hands-on experience and develop practical skills through attending court proceedings, trials, hearings, and other legal proceedings.
Feedback is an important part of our program and summer associates receive formal reviews halfway through the summer and at the end of the program. Informal feedback is also provided on a regular basis, and we encourage summer associates to actively seek feedback from the attorneys they are working with.
Training and Mentorship
Each summer associate is assigned a mentor who plays a crucial role in their professional growth and integration into the firm. Mentors provide guidance, research and writing assistance, and are available to answer any questions that may arise during the summer. They also facilitate social networking and introduce summer associates to other attorneys and staff at the firm through lunches, firm events, and other activities. Our mentorship program aims to foster relationships that allow summer associates to feel comfortable seeking guidance and accelerate their professional growth.
Networking Opportunities and Social Events
In addition to the work assignments, summer associates have several opportunities to network with attorneys throughout the firm. These may include informal lunches, sporting events, trivia nights, and other social events. We believe it is important for summer associates to meet as many attorneys as possible and we are always looking for creative ways to facilitate these connections both inside and outside of the office.
Compensation and Expectations
Summer associates are compensated on a basis consistent with that of our full-time first-year associates. We expect our summer associates to work hard, take on challenging assignments, and actively participate in the program. We also expect them to maintain a professional demeanor and represent the firm in a positive light at all times.
