NJP is a non-profit statewide law firm with a mission to Combat Injustice, Strengthen Communities, and Protect Human Dignity. They provide legal advocacy and representation for low-income individuals and communities in Washington. NJP is currently seeking a qualified attorney to join their Farmworker Unit (FWU) and work with farmworker communities in various locations throughout the state.
The attorney must be bilingual in English and Spanish and culturally competent to address the legal needs of farmworkers and their communities. They should have a strong interest in working with farmworker communities and be willing to live and work in a rural area. The attorney should also have a demonstrated interest in high priority legal needs for farmworkers, such as employment and civil rights, and be able to establish trust and connections with low-income client communities.
The attorney will engage in strategic advocacy in multiple forums, including state and federal courts, administrative agencies, and appellate courts to address the high priority needs of the farmworker community. They will also work collaboratively with a statewide network of NJP advocates and their office teams to offer high quality legal assistance and representation to clients in priority cases. This may include sexual harassment, wage and hour, and retaliation cases, as well as H-2A and civil rights advocacy.
Other responsibilities include building relationships with community partners, engaging with the farmworker community to educate and empower them to exercise their legal rights, and supporting the work of NJP partners. The attorney will work as part of a team of six attorneys and four community educator/outreach workers.
NJP has adopted the Washington Race Equity and Justice Initiative (REJI) and expects all staff to uphold the REJI commitments and approach their role with a desire to learn and grow in this area. The attorney must also be willing to work within the context of funding restrictions and reporting requirements as a publicly funded and regulated entity.
The starting salary for this position is based on years of experience, with an annual salary range of $73,142 to $133,712. NJP also offers compensation for those who are regularly asked to use a language other than English in their work. The typical client office hours for NJP are 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, but the attorney may be expected to work additional hours to fulfill their professional responsibilities.
