Staff Attorney - Shriver Housing Project Los Angeles Job Type Full-time Description
NLSLA provides free assistance to over 160,000 individuals and families annually, addressing the most critical needs of people living in poverty in Los Angeles. NLSLA is seeking a licensed attorney to join our eviction defense team as a Staff Attorney for the Shriver Housing Project in Los Angeles. In this role, you will be an integral part of a dynamic team of advocates working on a pilot project examining the impact of legal services on individuals, the court, and the community in the Unlawful Detainer system. You will defend tenants against eviction cases in Los Angeles County, working directly with clients and engaging in all stages of litigation. This includes intake, pleadings, discovery, motions, hearings, settlement, administrative hearings, and trial. You will also have the opportunity to address systemic issues through impact litigation in state and federal court, work with community partners to develop resources and strategies for protecting homeowners and tenants, provide outreach and education to tenants and community groups, and assist with training support staff.
As a Staff Attorney, you will report to the Supervising Attorney and have the potential for future opportunities as a Senior Attorney. This is a full-time exempt position with a salary range of $78,000-$86,000. We enthusiastically encourage candidates of all backgrounds and abilities to apply.
In this role, you will:
- Provide counsel and advice on a variety of housing matters and represent tenants in administrative hearings with local housing authorities and through trial in unlawful detainer proceedings. - Manage a varied caseload, including preparing educational materials, participating in community events, and collaborating with pro bono partners. - Train and supervise students, support staff, and other volunteers working with the program. - Have the opportunity to work on policy issues related to housing/evictions and make court appearances when appropriate. - May be required to travel to other NLSLA branch offices, courts, government agencies, shelters, and community-based organizations in Los Angeles County.
Qualifications:
- A JD from an accredited law school. - Current membership in the California Bar. - Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. - Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a fast-paced environment. - Excellent writing, speaking, and organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, community organizations, attorneys, the judiciary, and the public. - Ability to work effectively with staff and volunteers. - Passion for public service work and NLSLA's mission. - Bilingual verbal, reading, and writing proficiency in Spanish (preferred). - Experience working in a legal services firm (preferred). - Passion for supporting people from different lived experiences (preferred).
