Overview: - HCC is a community-based, not-for-profit organization located in Hell's Kitchen/Clinton on Manhattan's West Side. - Founded in 1972, HCC promotes social and economic justice and fights for the rights of poor, low-income, and working individuals and families. - Offers a wide range of legal, advocacy, weatherization, and community organizing services to tenants throughout Manhattan.
Job Description: - Represent tenants in nonpayment, holdover, and HP proceedings in Manhattan Housing Court. - Provide brief legal advice and pre-litigation advocacy to tenants and tenant associations. - Collaborate with HCC's tenant and community organizers, paralegals, social workers, tenant advocates, and Senior Community Resource Coordinator. - Conduct workshops on housing law, immigration law, and older adult issues. - Opportunity to work on immigration and older adult matters. - Conduct intake and participate in HCC's Monday Night Legal Clinic. - Collaborate with and oversee law student interns, volunteers, and pro bono co-counsel. - Participate in HCC's Annual West Side Tenants' Conference.
Salary and Benefits: - Minimum $72,877 - Maximum $117,064 for NYS Bar admitted attorneys; $70,419 for law graduates. - Ability to work remotely up to two days per week. - Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance with no employee contribution. - 24 days of annual leave, increasing to 28 days after the second year of employment, plus one floating holiday. - 14 paid holidays. - 5% employer contribution to 403(b) retirement plan after six months of employment.
Qualifications: - Member of the New York State Bar (or eligible to transfer admission from another jurisdiction) or 3L law student planning to take the February 2025 or July 2025 NYS Bar Exam. - Preferably at least one year of relevant experience in poverty law, with preference given to those with experience in housing law. - Oral and written proficiency in another language, preferably Spanish. - Excellent litigation, research, writing, and organizational skills. - Demonstrated commitment to social justice for underserved populations. - Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
