Position Summary: The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** (LANWT) is seeking a dynamic and passionate attorney to join our team as a Staff Attorney for our Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault (LASSA) project in Odessa, TX. This is a full-time, hybrid/remote position that involves providing legal representation to survivors of sexual assault and working collaboratively with partner agencies to provide holistic advocacy. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to public interest law and a desire to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
Responsibilities: - Provide daily representation in civil legal matters to survivors of sexual assault and trauma - Work collaboratively with partner agencies, including domestic violence shelters and crisis centers, to provide coordinated, holistic advocacy - Gather evidence, advise clients about their rights, draft legal documents, and conduct civil lawsuits - Interview clients and witnesses with cultural competence - Represent clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of government - Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the client community - Provide legal assistance in areas of general civil law, including but not limited to: housing, foreclosure prevention, landlord-tenant, family, consumer, probate, special education, public benefits, and bankruptcy - Design and carry out outreach and community legal education programs - Establish meaningful relationships with community organizations - Conduct intake at shelters and participate in outreach offered by LANWT - Occasionally attend evening legal clinics - Supervise and coordinate activities of legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers
Qualifications: - Licensed to practice law in Texas - Experience handling contested family law or immigration cases preferred - Experience working with survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault preferred - Strong understanding of Texas Family Code, Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, and Texas Rules of Evidence - Prior legal services, public interest, or volunteer experience serving low-income persons preferred - Excellent verbal and written communication skills - Ability to think and plan strategically and to develop and implement projects - Strong work ethic and sense of accountability - Fluent in Spanish - both verbal and written preferred - Excellent attendance record - Ability to engage in occasional travel throughout LANWT's service area
Salary: - Starting salary for a new attorney is $66,500 per year - Salary for successful applicant may be significantly higher based on experience
