Sanctuary for Families is seeking a part-time Staff Attorney to provide legal representation to survivors of domestic and gender-based violence in family law matters. The attorney will work out of the Brooklyn Family Justice Center, reporting to the Senior Program Director and Associate Program Director. This is a hybrid position, with the attorney expected to work three days a week (Wednesdays through Fridays). The salary for this position ranges from $47,385 to $55,013 per year, based on a step wage scale.

We provide comprehensive services to help survivors rebuild their lives and work towards ending gender violence through direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available at 12 locations throughout New York City.
Job Summary:
The Staff Attorney will provide direct representation and advocacy to clients in family law litigation, including family offense, custody and visitation, and child and spousal support. They will maintain a caseload of approximately 10-15 active clients per month and 20-30 active cases. The attorney will also conduct community outreach, train law students and pro bono attorneys, and collaborate with other agencies to advocate for systemic change. Fluency in a community language other than English is a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct representation and advocacy to clients in family law litigation, including family offense, custody and visitation, and child and spousal support. - Maintain a caseload of approximately 10-15 active clients per month and 20-30 active cases. - Conduct outreach to underserved communities. - Train law students, pro bono attorneys, social service providers, health care professionals, and community-based organizations on domestic violence and the legal needs of victims. - Represent Sanctuary for Families on task forces and other political and advocacy committees outside the agency. - Collaborate with volunteers, interns, and pro bono attorneys. - Facilitate clients' access to resources and administer direct financial assistance and donations. - Attend and participate in interagency conferences to stay informed about developments in pro bono, domestic violence, and legal remedies for victims. - Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements:
- J.D. Degree and admission to the New York State Bar. - Minimum of two years of relevant legal experience. - Fluency in a community language other than English is a plus. - Strong lawyering, advocacy, and leadership skills. - Highly motivated to provide zealous, knowledgeable, culturally competent, and empathic legal advocacy to domestic violence survivors. - Ability to work well with people from diverse communities and backgrounds.
