Job Title: Sr. Director - Patent Counsel - Genetic Medicines Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America Category: Legal Job Type: Full Time Regular Job Id: R-74211
Salary Information: Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is $195,000 - $286,000.
Responsibilities:
- Draft and prosecute pharmaceutical patent applications globally, primarily related to genetic medicines such as gene therapies, cell therapies, and therapeutic oligonucleotides. - Participate in overall patent portfolio strategy discussions and provide solutions-focused counseling for issues facing Lilly. - Analyze risks and develop tactical strategies with consideration for business objectives and legal requirements. - Advise teams and senior management on exclusivity, freedom to operate, contract management, and litigation risks. - Stay informed on global laws and regulations related to pharmaceutical products and apply knowledge in daily work and team collaborations. - Prioritize and manage projects, contribute to policy and procedure development, and lead task-directed teams. - Foster a culture of efficiency, collegiality, and collaboration.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a scientific field with a strong understanding of genetic medicine products. - Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree from an accredited institution. - Four or more years of post-JD experience as a patent attorney in a law firm or industry. - Licensed to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction and in good standing with the USPTO.
Additional Skills/Preferences:
- Collaborative and able to work effectively with team members and management at all levels. - At least 4 years of technical experience in the pharmaceutical industry or experience with patent litigation related to pharmaceutical products. - At least 4 years of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications for life science inventions. - Innovative and proactive with the ability to influence and lead in a dynamic environment. - High learning agility, including problem-solving, adaptability, curiosity, and openness to feedback. - Organized and able to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work effectively with individuals and teams. - Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Additional Information:
- Office work located at Lilly Seaport Innovation Center (Boston) and Lilly Corporate Center (Indianapolis). - Travel is usually minimal (0-5%), but may increase to 10-20% for internal or external requirements.
