Overview:
- Partner with R&D and IP Legal teams to execute IP strategies for FTO and enforcement activities across the Medtronic portfolio - Conduct patent risk assessments and work closely with operating unit IP counsel and R&D teams - Review and interpret FTO search results, and provide actionable recommendations - Analyze third-party infringement claims and assess patent validity - Collaborate with engineering, marketing, and business development teams to understand competition and emerging technologies - Support new product development through patent clearance studies - Build relationships across Medtronic Legal and business teams to manage IP risks - Cultivate strategic relationships and manage outside counsel - Monitor changes to the competitive landscape for medical device and healthcare technology - Serve as a resource for in-house attorneys and R&D teams, providing legal advice on FTO activities - Be a strategic and inclusive IP partner - Develop technical acumen and IP risk calibration - Communicate IP advice clearly and succinctly to all levels of management
Requirements:
- J.D. degree - 8 years of FTO and IP enforcement experience - Licensed to practice law in at least one state or the District of Columbia
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar scientific discipline - Broad IP experience, including FTO, opinion preparation, licensing, IP transactions, and patent prosecution - Litigation experience strongly preferred - Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office preferred - Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills - Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills - Ability to prioritize and remain organized in a fast-paced environment - Strong sense of ownership and accountability - Able to make decisions in ambiguous situations and thrive under pressure - Proactive, pragmatic, and solutions-oriented mindset - Working knowledge of Microsoft applications
