Senior Counsel - Boulder, CO (Full time)
Compensation Details: Full Pay Range 137,155.20 - 205,753.60
The City of Boulder is seeking a skilled and experienced attorney to join our team as Senior Counsel. This position offers a competitive salary range of $137,155.20 - $205,753.60 and a full benefits package. As a Senior Counsel, you will have the opportunity to use your expertise in employment law, labor law, real estate transactions, and election law to serve the community by advising City Council, departments, and boards. This role also involves drafting ordinances and resolutions, representing the City in litigation and administrative hearings, and negotiating complex agreements.
This is a full-time, salaried position with a minimum requirement of 40 hours per week. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to public service and a significant amount of experience in municipal law. They must also possess exceptional analytical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice to City Council, departments, administrative staff, and boards and commissions, including attending evening meetings. - Prepare ordinances and resolutions. - Represent the City in civil litigation cases and administrative hearings under the direction of the City Attorney. - Negotiate, review, and prepare agreements and contracts. - Perform other legal services as directed by the City Attorney or Deputy City Attorney. - Maintain a safe work environment by following all safety protocols and reporting any accidents or damage. - Adhere to all City and department policies, participate in professional trainings and development, and follow attendance and workplace attire policies.

- Confident and professional in working with others, able to build relationships and facilitate productive teams. - Motivated by and dedicated to community service and protecting the legal interests of the City. - Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, with the ability to adapt style to fit the needs of different audiences. - Able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and priorities, and identify creative solutions to unique problems while also considering City policies and goals. - Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, representatives of public or private entities, and members of the public. - Able to exercise initiative, judgment, and decision-making in solving problems and meeting organizational objectives. - Able to independently interpret and apply written guidelines, precedents, and standardized work practices. - Able to partner effectively with team members and internal and external partners to facilitate communication and collaboration. - Able to prepare professional, concise, and grammatically correct written documents. - Able to read, analyze, and interpret complex legal documents. - Knowledge of analysis and research techniques to gather and analyze information and make recommendations. - Knowledge of applicable law, court procedures, and rules of evidence to prepare and litigate cases and represent the City in administrative hearings. - Knowledge of municipal law, including policy, ordinances, and City Charter requirements. - Knowledge of general law and ability to collaborate with other attorneys. - Experience in significant litigation, administrative law practice, and other specialized areas such as election, land use, or real estate transactions. - Acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
Preferred Requirements:
- Work experience in state or local government and familiarity with home rule authority.
