Spotsylvania County is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Senior Assistant County Attorney to join our team. In this role, you will provide legal advice and counsel to County departments, boards, and commissions, as well as represent the County in court. You will also play a crucial role in drafting ordinances, legal opinions, contracts, and other legal documents.
Minimum Experience: Juris Doctorate Degree Licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia 5-7 years of experience in the practice of law 3-5 years of experience in local government law 2 years of litigation experience
Responsibilities: - Prepare and present cases in state and federal courts - Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda of law - Provide legal advice and counsel to the Board of Supervisors and County agencies - Supervise support staff - Draft legal documents such as ordinances, contracts, and opinions - Stay up-to-date on developments in the field of criminal law - Attend continuing legal education courses - Advise the various elected constitutional officers on civil matters - Advise HR on employment-related issues
Requirements: - Knowledge of legal proceedings, practices, and regulations - Familiarity with Commonwealth and local laws, codes, and ordinances - Ability to conduct comprehensive legal research - Understanding of the judicial system and court procedures - Skilled in legal writing and oratory - Effective communication and interpersonal skills - Ability to use common office machinery - Ability to interpret and apply laws and court decisions - Ability to maintain complex legal records - Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment - Ability to handle varying levels of stress - Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully
