**MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** (BayLegal) is seeking a Supervising Attorney to lead and support their San Francisco Social Security Disability/SSI Advocacy Team. This team provides free civil legal services to individuals and families living in poverty in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a focus on addressing legal issues related to housing, public benefits, healthcare, and safety from interpersonal violence. BayLegal is committed to professional excellence, client-centered advocacy, and ethical standards in legal representation.

Key Responsibilities:

- Supervise, mentor, and support attorneys and social workers in delivering high-quality legal advocacy and social work services.
- Oversee litigation, direct representation, policy advocacy, and outreach efforts, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical obligations.
- Provide case strategy guidance and legal oversight, including reviewing pleadings, co-counseling cases, and reviewing supervisees’ cases.
- Facilitate regular team meetings to assess case progress, coordinate interdisciplinary services, discuss legal strategies, and address emerging challenges.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders, such as the San Francisco Human Services Agency, community-based organizations, and healthcare providers, to improve service delivery and client outcomes.
- Develop and implement training programs to enhance staff expertise in Social Security Disability and related legal matters.
- Ensure accurate case documentation and compliance with grant and funding requirements.
- Participate in local, state, and federal policy discussions related to disability benefits advocacy.
- Contribute to organizational initiatives, including grant compliance, data collection, and reporting.
- Carry a small caseload and cover team cases as needed.

Qualifications:

- J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in the California State Bar (or eligibility to obtain admission within a reasonable period).
- Minimum of five years of relevant legal experience, including experience litigating Social Security disability claims. One or more years of supervisory experience, required (preferred for internal candidates).
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in a legal setting.
- Strong litigation, negotiation, and legal research skills.
- Ability to develop legal strategies that prioritize client needs and adhere to principles of fairness and impartiality.
- Experience working with individuals facing economic hardships and barriers to legal representation.
- Commitment to fostering a professional and respectful workplace culture that values diverse perspectives and experiences.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Ability to travel within San Francisco to meet clients and oversee team activities in the community.

Compensation and Benefits:

BayLegal offers a diverse, family-friendly environment and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries, along with a generous benefits package. The estimated starting annual salary range for this position is $105,000 - $135,000, with placement in the range determined primarily by years of related experience. BayLegal's benefits package includes 100% employer-covered medical, dental, and life insurance for employees and up to 60% for dependents; long-term disability insurance; stipends for bilingual employees; a student debt repayment program; a dependent childcare employer contribution program; and a 401k retirement plan following the first year. The paid leave policy includes sick leave, parental leave, 15 holidays each year, and vacation (starting at 13 days and increasing with additional years of employment).

Hybrid Work Option:

BayLegal is committed to the health and safety of their staff, clients, and community. As a direct services community-based law firm, BayLegal has protocols in place to minimize the risk of exposure. They have an evolving plan to safely increase in-person services and activities in their offices and community-based advocacy sites. Employees are expected to work on-site and in-person three days per week and as needed for client services and office staffing needs. They may also work remotely from home on a part-time basis. Employees must reside in California and be able to commute to their physical BayLegal base location and other service-delivery locations as needed during the standard work week.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

Work Environment: This position is primarily sedentary and currently hybrid remote. When in the office, the applicant can expect to be working at a desk in a temperature-controlled office, in a modular space or individual office. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands: While performing duties of the job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
