Job Description
The Office of the Public Defender is currently seeking a Public Defender to join our team. As a Public Defender, you will be responsible for providing legal defense to indigent clients and other persons in criminal and civil cases who are entitled to assistance of counsel. This position requires a Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school and membership in the State Bar of Montana. Previous experience in criminal defense is preferred.

About the Position:
As a Public Defender, you will serve as a defense attorney for indigent clients and other persons in criminal and civil cases. This includes representing clients in court, preparing legal documents, interpreting and applying state and federal laws, and providing consultation and legal advice. You will also have the opportunity to work collaboratively with marginalized populations and strive to improve the level of services provided to our clients.
Essential Functions:
- Represent clients in court and other legal proceedings, including cases at the Montana Supreme Court. - Provide legal defense in cases that may be high-profile or involve significant liability exposure. - Review and prepare legal documents, such as opinions, contracts, and agreements. - Interpreting and applying state and federal laws and administrative rules. - Identify and interview parties, witnesses, and experts involved in legal proceedings. - Provide consultation, make recommendations, and facilitate legal decisions. - Serve as a legal advisor in specific fields of law and provide training and guidance as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school. - Membership in the State Bar of Montana. - Previous experience in criminal defense is preferred.
