Work type: Part Time Hourly Location: Valparaiso, IN Categories: Student Affairs/Student Services General Description of Position: Assist disabled students in class activities in which they cannot gain access or complete without reasonable accommodation. The Access Assistant is responsible for assisting Disability Support Services students in the classroom, lab or testing environment with reading/scribe, computer and technology access. Major Responsibilities: Essential duties and responsibilities include the following: Attends class/lab with student. Acts as reader and/or scribe, including note taking before, after or in class, lab, or testing environment. Facilitates computer and technology access as appropriate. May assist access to technology as appropriate. May describe graphics or pictures in the classroom, lab or testing environment. May assist student with object manipulation during laboratory classes as needed. Other duties may be assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Attends class/lab with student. Ability to maintain boundaries with student as set by supervisor. Ability to appropriately communicate with students, faculty, and staff. Must act in a professional manner and be dependable. Must maintain confidentiality regarding student information. Skills: Must possess required skills and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Maintaining an established work schedule which may include evenings and weekends. Ability to listen to, understand, and follow directions. Willingness to work closely with students with disabilities. Proficiency with accessible software and devices. Technology Skills: Demonstrated proficiency using standard office software applications. Physical Requirements: Work is normally performed in a standard office, classroom or laboratory setting. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds. Work Hours: Day, evening, or Saturday classes may be required. Approximately 15 hours per week.
