We are looking for a Paralegal to join our team in McKinney, Texas. As a Paralegal, you will primarily support and coordinate our firm's response to disasters throughout our service area. This is a full-time, hybrid/remote position with a competitive salary and excellent benefits package. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law.
Responsibilities: - Provide paraprofessional legal services to eligible clients in civil, family, and other cases under the supervision of an attorney - Participate in outreach and community legal education to clients and community groups - Assist attorneys or other advocates in representing clients or working with community groups - Conduct intake and initial client screening, referring clients to other resources or providers if ineligible for LANWT services - Investigate and develop assigned cases and projects, including conducting interviews - Make and follow up on referrals for clients to other sources of assistance - Draft legal documents, including pleadings, orders, letters, and memos - File legal papers at the courthouse or through e-filing, including setting hearing dates and interacting with court staff, opposing parties, and clients - Maintain accurate, organized records and files for assigned cases and projects - Develop specialized skills and knowledge in assigned areas and stay current on new developments - Translate for clients who speak a different language than their advocate (if applicable) - Seek and accept supervision and guidance from supervising attorneys - Participate in training programs and staff meetings - Report caseload statistics and other information to supervisors on a regular basis - Travel to administrative agencies and other locations as needed - Develop a working knowledge of relevant laws and legal skills - Stay updated on issues that may affect LANWT's client population and advise management and staff accordingly - Develop relationships with social service agencies and other organizations that can assist LANWT's clients - Represent clients at hearings and other applicable guidelines - Provide information to LANWT's administrative office on services provided - Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisors
Qualifications: - Associate's Degree and paralegal certification preferred - Fluent in Spanish (verbal and written) preferred - Prior experience in landlord-tenant, public benefits, FEMA, or disaster related cases - Detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated - Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines - Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) - Professional and courteous demeanor - Proficient in Microsoft products - Able to work independently and maintain confidentiality - Willingness to travel occasionally - Excellent attendance record
