This position offers a competitive hourly rate of $25.99 and the option for up to 4 days of remote work per week.
About the Office and the Position
The Office of Chief Trial Counsel is responsible for handling intake, investigation, and prosecution of allegations against attorneys who have violated the State Bar Act or Rules of Professional Conduct. They also oversee complaints of unauthorized practice of law by non-attorneys. As a Law Clerk, you will work under the supervision of a member of the State Bar to conduct legal research, draft legal documents, and assist in the timely processing of legal advice and litigation.
Minimum Qualifications and Ideal Candidate
To be considered for this position, you must be enrolled in an accredited law school with a minimum academic standing of C or better. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to the State Bar's values of clarity, excellence, respect, and a growth mindset, as well as an interest in learning and working in the public sector. They should also have the ability to collaborate with various areas of the State Bar and be available to work 10 weeks full-time from May/June through early August 2025. This is a hybrid remote schedule, with the expectation of working 1 day per week in the Los Angeles office. Candidates must reside in California and be able to go into the office at least once a week.
Application Requirements and Deadline
In addition to completing the State Bar application, interested candidates must submit a letter of interest explaining why they are interested in the role and highlighting their relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities. The letter should be limited to one page. The application deadline is January 31, 2025, at 5 pm.
Responsibilities and Employment Standards
As a Law Clerk, your duties may include conducting legal research, analyzing files and case laws, and preparing legal memoranda and draft reports. You may also assist in updating State Bar publications and educating the public on the professional and ethical responsibilities of lawyers. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of basic legal research methods and procedures, legal principles and their applications, and computerized communication and processing systems. They should also possess strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills and be able to handle public contact by telephone.
